Discovering Truth: The Life-Changing Impact of Reading the Bible

Have you ever ordered a piece of furniture that needs to be assembled? When you get it you take out all the pieces and assess how it should go together. If you are like me, you sit the directions aside and begin assembly. About half way through, you realize it is not going together like you thought. You can either start over, keep going and hope it works out, or read the directions and be sure it will go together correctly. The obvious choice should be to read the directions, but so often we press on without them trusting our intelligence to be able to figure it out! However, since we didn't create the furniture we don't completely understand the designers plans for each part included in the box.

In the end, the furniture might turn out right, but the instructions ensure that it will turn out right when you follow them. Most likely you end up with "extra" pieces that you are sure you don't need. The furniture might be a little wobbly or crooked, but it works! Project complete(ish). If you had read the instructions, despite the time commitment, you have a piece of furniture put together in the manner in which it was designed to work. When you skip the directions, the furniture might turn out right, but it might not.

The Bible is our instruction book for life! Much like the furniture project directions, most Christians skip reading it. Research from 2021 found that only 11% of Christians read their Bibles daily. Only half of Christians read their Bibles once a week. This makes me think, if it is hard to put together a piece of furniture without directions, how much harder are we making life without reading the directions. The Bible is full of wisdom and instruction and teaches us who God is!

So why don't we read the Bible? Many people say they don't have time. If you don't have time to read the Bible, you might want to consider your priorities and make time. Consider this, if you are married and told your spouse you didn't have to talk to them every day, I am pretty sure that would not go well for you. Everyday you don't read your Bible, you are telling God you don't have time for Him. Did you know the primary way God speaks to us is through His Word? God used men to write the every detail He wants us to know about Him. The more you read it the more you get to know God. It is worth your time to read the Bible!

Another reason people say they don't read the Bible is because they don't understand it. I used to be one of those people. However, God's Words tells us to read it. In Romans 15:4 says, "For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope." Paul lets us know that God's Word is for our instruction. He mentions that reading God's Word will take endurance and encouragement, but it will give us hope. In Psalm 119:11, the author expresses the importance of God's Word, "I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you." The Bible is meant to guide us, encourage us, and give us hope!

The last reason I will mention is that many think the Bible is outdated. Our culture no longer relates to the truths of the Bible. This belief is contradictory to Scripture. Hebrews 4:12 states, "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." The Word of God is active, not old! That is a lie we tell ourselves to justify our behavior.

If there is anything Live Transformed Ministry can tell you to make your life better, it is to READ the Bible! If you think you can't, that is a lie. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He said he was sending us a helper, so we would be able to understand all He taught. That helper is the Holy Spirit. Every believer receives the Holy Spirit when they accept Jesus as their Savior. Therefore, you have all you need to not only read the Bible but to understand it! We can't fully explain how this works, you have to experience it to understand! Start reading and see what God does in your life!

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."
