Understanding Homosexuality in the Light of God’s Word

If you are reading this post, you must want some understanding about homosexuality and the truth of God's Word. This can be a very controversial subject, but it doesn't have to be. Let's see what God's Word says about the topic and then we'll discuss how you apply these truths to your life!

If you are a Christian, you believe that God created the universe and everything in it. And as Creator that gives Him authority to choose how everything works based on what He designed everything for. In Genesis, chapter two, God gives more detail about how he created man. Then He allowed Adam, the first man, to name all the animals. However, animals were not suitable helpers for Adam. Therefore, God caused Adam to fall asleep and He removed a rib from Adam's side to create woman. You can see in very beginning, God created man and woman as two distinct beings. At the end of all this, God states, "That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh." In the beginning, God established the marriage covenant. It was between one man and one woman for the rest of their life.

Maybe this makes you uncomfortable because you want to accept homosexuality as a lifestyle or you know people living in that lifestyle that you love. I get it! This can be a hard topic because we don't want to alienate or condemn people we love! However, if God says something is wrong, we must believe it is wrong. In Leviticus, we read, "Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable." (Leviticus 18:22) Detestable is a strong word, so God clearly does not agree with same sex relations.

When you study creation, you understand that God designed all living things to bring forth life! Plants make seeds to make more plants. Animals were designed to create more of their kind. In fact, that is why Noah needed two animals of every kind on the Ark, one male and one female. This was so that when the flood ended, the animals could reproduce and fill the earth. The same principle applies to humans. We were given the command in Genesis 1:28, "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it." Homosexuality goes against the natural order of life because the relationship will never reproduce life. A man and a man cannot create another living being. The same goes for a woman and a woman. Life will never come from their physical relationship.

God only wants what is best for His children! There are times it might not feel like that because you have desires to do things God says not to do. This is when we have to choose to trust God over our desires. Romans 1:24-27 declares, "Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error." God allows us to do what we want, it is our free will. However, our free will doesn't always lead us to do what is best for us!

Homosexuality is a sinful lifestyle based on how God designed mankind. You can read more about this in Leviticus 20:13, Mark 10:6-9, 1 Corinthians 6:9, 1 Timothy 1:8-11, and Jude 1:7. Hopefully, this settles in your spirit the truth about homosexuality. However, this might leave you thinking so how do I use this in my life when relating to those living this lifestyle?God calls us to LOVE! You can love someone and disagree with their choices. The person living this lifestyle should know you disagree with their choices based on God's Word, but you should treat them as any other person. Hopefully, you can encourage them to study God's Word and to be changed through the power of the Holy Spirit! However, that is between them and the Lord. It is not your job to change someone, just to encourage and love!

I do believe that as Christians, we are falling short by turning a blind eye to those living in sexual sin. Sexual sin encompasses ALL sexual relations outside of a marriage between a woman and a man! The more you study scripture, the more sin will become detestable to you just as it is to God. Once you see sin for what it is, a choice to separate yourself from God, your desires begin to shift to align with God.

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."
Romans 12:1-2
