It’s easy to sit through a sermon, listen to a podcast, or read a Bible passage and feel inspired. But what happens after the “amen”? Do the truths we hear make their way into our actions—or do they fade by the time we step into our daily routine?
James 1:22 puts it plainly: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”
James compares someone who only hears the Word to a person who looks in a mirror and immediately forgets what they look like. It’s a powerful image—because God’s Word reveals who we truly are and how we’re called to live. But if we only hear it without applying it, we’re missing the point entirely.
Why Doing Matters
Being a “doer” doesn’t mean earning our way to God or checking boxes to feel spiritual. It’s about living in response to what He’s already done. God’s Word isn’t just information—it’s transformation. It shapes how we speak, how we treat others, how we handle conflict, and how we serve those in need.
When we obey Scripture, even in small ways, we step into freedom. James calls it “the perfect law that gives freedom” (James 1:25). That might sound backwards—how can rules bring freedom? But living by God’s truth actually frees us from sin, selfishness, and the lies of the world.
What Does Being a Doer Look Like?
Listening before speaking (James 1:19)
Keeping a tight rein on our words (James 1:26)
Caring for the vulnerable (James 1:27)
Living with integrity and showing no favoritism (James 2)
Letting our faith be seen in our actions (James 2:14–26)
God isn’t looking for perfect performance—He’s looking for surrendered hearts. When we take what we read or hear from His Word and put it into practice, we become more like Christ. That’s when faith becomes real.
A Simple Challenge
This week, don’t just ask, “What did I learn?”—also ask, “What will I do?”
Whether it’s offering forgiveness, giving generously, praying for someone, or biting your tongue in a moment of frustration, take one step of obedience in response to God’s Word. He promises blessing not just to those who listen—but to those who live it out. We'd love for you to comment and let us know how you are putting into action what you are learning from the Word of God. Let' s inspire each other with how we can become doers and not just hearers.
